Cruise and Walk the Wild Isles of Scotland

Your journey begins in Liverpool, a city renowned for its rich maritime heritage and cultural significance. After boarding Borealis at the cruise terminal, you’ll settle into life on board as the ship departs, heading north towards the wild and rugged coastlines of Scotland. The excitement builds as you leave the city behind and begin your exploration of some of the UK’s most remote landscapes. Meet the group at 5pm for a welcome drinks receptions before heading into dinner. 

Today is devoted to scenic cruising through some of Scotland’s most breathtaking coastal landscapes. As Borealis glides along the west coast, you’ll pass Duart Castle dramatically perched on a rocky promontory, before entering the tranquil waters of Loch Hourn, widely regarded as one of Scotland’s most beautiful sea lochs. Later, the ship navigates past the Small Isles, where rugged terrain and the potential for wildlife sightings create a truly memorable day at sea.

Arriving in Ullapool, you’ll step into the heart of the Scottish Highlands, surrounded by mountains and unspoilt natural beauty. From here, your guided walk takes you to Stac Pollaidh, one of the region’s most iconic peaks. Following a circular route, you have the option to ascend to the ridge for spectacular panoramic views across Assynt’s dramatic landscape of lochs and hills. Along the way, keep an eye out for golden eagles soaring above and red deer roaming the slopes, adding to the sense of wilderness and remoteness.

The next day brings you to Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, where a unique blend of Scandinavian heritage and Scottish culture awaits. Your walk leads to St Ninian’s Isle, reached by crossing a remarkable natural sand tombolo that connects it to the mainland. As you explore the island, you’ll discover sweeping coastal views, rugged cliffs and the evocative ruins of St Ninian’s Chapel, offering a fascinating glimpse into the area’s past within an extraordinary natural setting.

Today you arrive in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, the largest of the Outer Hebrides. Here, your guided walk takes you across the island of Great Bernera, revealing some of the region’s most striking coastal scenery. The route follows shoreline paths before climbing to Stiogha Chnap, where expansive views open out over the Atlantic. You’ll then descend towards the beautiful sands of Bostadh Beach, a pristine and remote stretch of coastline rich in birdlife and natural beauty, capturing the essence of Hebridean life.

Your final full day is spent at sea, but the scenery remains as captivating as ever. From the deck, you’ll witness the distinctive shape of Dutchman’s Cap rising from the ocean, followed by the extraordinary sight of Fingal’s Cave on the Isle of Staffa. Formed by striking basalt columns, the cave’s cathedral-like appearance is one of Scotland’s most iconic natural wonders and provides a dramatic highlight to your journey.

Returning to Liverpool, your journey comes to an end after an unforgettable exploration of Scotland’s remote islands, dramatic coastlines and exceptional walking landscapes. You’ll disembark with lasting memories of wild beauty, rich history and immersive adventure.
