Whilst on a Grade 4 walk these can be full or half day walks at a moderate pace over hilly terrain and is likely to include an element of sightseeing as well. Half day walking will probably include about 3 hours of walking, with full days having around 5 hours. Expect ascents and descents of up to about 600m.
Our Grade 6 walks are full days with appreciable amounts of ascent and descent with walks in some remote areas. Paths are mostly good, but there may be some steep and rough ground. Walks will last up to 6 hours and could involve as much as 750m of ascent and descent.
Please note some walks my involve walking on Lava Paths. These paths require particular concentration and steady footing to navigate.

This carefully designed three-week holiday is led by experienced leaders and enhanced by knowledgeable local guides who join each walk to share their insight into the islands’ landscapes, wildlife and culture.
Your first centre is La Palma, offering some of the Canary Islands’ most spectacular walking. Explore ancient laurel forests, fragrant pine woods and dramatic volcanic landscapes shaped by centuries of eruptions. Walk in the magnificent Caldera de Taburiente National Park and follow sections of the famous Ruta de los Volcanes, with sweeping views across craters, lava fields and the island’s rugged coastline. Discover the colourful capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma, and learn about the island’s unique flora, geology and culture through the insights of expert local guides.
A short inter-island flight takes you to Lanzarote, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a true volcanic wonderland. Here, dramatic lava fields, striking volcanic cones and black-sand beaches contrast with palm groves, vineyards and whitewashed villages. Explore highlights such as Haría, the “Valley of a Thousand Palms”, and walk ancient trading paths to Teguise, the island’s former capital, with sweeping views across to La Graciosa. San Antonio Volcano
Today, you travel by hired bus to the charming village of Montes de Luna, where your walk begins. Following a scenic path that gently rises and falls along the southern slopes of the island, you'll enjoy spectacular coastal and volcanic views as you make your way towards Fuencaliente. After a well-earned coffee stop in the village, continue to the San Antonio Volcano, where you can explore the crater rim, visit the Visitor Centre, and learn about the dramatic eruption that formed the volcano in the 1600s. From the rim, you'll also have the chance to see several of La Palma's younger volcanic landscapes, including areas affected by the island's most recent eruption in 2021.
After lunch, the adventure continues south through a striking volcanic landscape, passing a succession of lava fields and craters. The walk ends at the Faro de Fuencaliente (lighthouse), where there is a small museum and a café/bar offering local cakes and refreshments. From here, your group will return by bus, having experienced some of the island's most fascinating volcanic scenery.

Ruta de los Volcanes
Today, you tackle one of La Palma’s classic walks along the dramatic volcanic spine of the island. A private transfer takes you up the mountain road to El Pilar at around 1,450 metres above sea level, where your adventure begins.
Following the renowned GR 131 Ruta de los Volcanes, you climb steadily onto the ridge, enjoying spectacular views of the Caldera de Taburiente to the north and, if conditions are right, the famous Mar de Nubes (sea of clouds) stretching below. Remaining on the main ridge path, you bypass the lower peaks and the Hoyo Negro crater, instead heading south towards the striking Volcán de la Deseada, the highest volcano on the island’s spine.
A safe ascent to the rim rewards you with unforgettable 360-degree panoramas across La Palma and the surrounding Atlantic. Continuing south along the ridge, you pass through a remarkable landscape of volcanic cones and lava fields before reaching the aptly named “View of Views”. From here, you can look south towards Volcán de San Martín and, on clear days, across the ocean to the neighbouring islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro.
The walk concludes with a gradual descent to Fuencaliente, bringing to an end this memorable 18km journey through some of the island’s most spectacular scenery before your return transfer.

Pico Bejenado
Today’s walk begins with a transfer to a drop-off point at 1,300m, high above the Aridane Valley. From here, you follow forest tracks with impressive views into the vast Caldera de Taburiente, one of La Palma’s most spectacular natural features.
Leaving the lower route behind, you climb steadily through fragrant Canary pine forest towards Pico Bejenado at 1,845m. The summit is one of the finest viewpoints on the island, offering breathtaking panoramas across the Caldera, the rugged central peaks and, on clear days, the west coast and Atlantic Ocean beyond.
After taking time to enjoy the views, retrace your steps and rejoin the main route. The descent continues through scenic woodland, passing ancient petroglyphs before arriving at the El Paso Visitor Centre, where you can learn more about La Palma’s unique geology, wildlife and cultural heritage.

Highest Point and Observatories
Today’s walk takes you into the high mountains of La Palma for a spectacular ridge-top adventure, best enjoyed in clear weather. A transfer brings you to the starting point at approximately 1,900m, where you begin your ascent towards the highest part of the island.
Following mountain trails just below the rim of the vast Caldera de Taburiente, you are treated to constantly changing views across the island’s dramatic landscapes. The route descends briefly into the caldera before climbing steadily to Roque de los Muchachos, the island’s highest point at 2,426m.
At the summit, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the caldera, the Atlantic Ocean and, on clear days, neighbouring Canary Islands. The area is also home to one of the world's most important astronomical sites, with an impressive collection of observatories, radio antennas and telescopes scattered across the mountaintop.
After taking time to savour the summit experience and explore the observatory area, continue along the ridge to the collection point for your return transfer to the hotel.

Haria to Teguise (Grade 4)
Opt for two linear walks, each with varying distance and ascent, tracing old trading paths from Haria, the Valley of a Thousand Palm Trees, to the historic capital of Teguise. These ancient and rugged tracks ascend to a high plateau, reaching the church of Ermita de las Nieves. Both walks offer spectacular views inland and to the coast. Take time to explore the serene Teguise. In Grade 4, the ascent occurs at the beginning of the walk and up to the first break, after which it transforms into easy walking.

Following a gentle 15km route, you pass through the remarkable volcanic landscapes of Chinyero and Montaña Negra, where lava flows and striking rock formations tell the story of the island’s volcanic past. The trail winds through fragrant Canary pine forests, offering welcome shade and a contrast to the dark volcanic terrain underfoot.
Throughout the day, there are superb views of Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak, dominating the skyline. The route gradually descends through this ever-changing landscape before reaching the traditional village of Santiago del Teide, a charming rural settlement rich in local character and history.

Today’s walk begins in the spectacular mountain village of Masca, one of Tenerife’s most dramatic and picturesque locations. Nestled among towering cliffs and rugged peaks, it provides a memorable starting point for a day of outstanding scenery.
Setting out along mountain trails, you traverse a landscape shaped by volcanic activity, with sweeping views across deep valleys, rocky ridges and the surrounding countryside. The route climbs steadily through this rugged terrain, rewarding your efforts with panoramic vistas of Tenerife’s western mountains and coastline.
As the walk progresses, the scenery gradually changes, giving way to peaceful pine forests and more open countryside. Descending through these tranquil landscapes, you make your way towards Los Llanos, where the combination of natural beauty, varied terrain and far-reaching views provides a fitting conclusion to this rewarding walk.

Tenerife's landscape offers a unique terrain, transitioning from lush green valleys of the Anaga Peninsula to dramatic rocky coastal paths, and finally to arid desert and lunar-like walking around Mount Teide.
Your journey begins with a cable car ascent of Mount Teide, reaching 3,555m above sea level for a guided visit of the crater and viewpoints, offering super views from Pico Viejo Viewpoint. After an hour at the summit, descend to the cable car station, lead through the volcanic landscape to the Roque de Garcia and Cathedral Rock escarpments.
Upon reaching the visitor centre at Roque de Garcia, extend your routes for those eager to explore more of this captivating landscape.
It is important to note the height of 3,555m and that the weather at the top of Mount Teide will be completely different to the base of the cable car station. Sometimes in winter this can be below freezing. Layers are the order of the day to cope with our changes in temperature.

Barceló Santiago is a stylish, adults‑friendly hotel set in a spectacular clifftop position in Puerto de Santiago, on Tenerife’s west coast. Known for its breathtaking views across the Atlantic towards La Gomera and Mount Teide, the hotel offers a peaceful stay. Comfortable, modern rooms often feature sea views, creating a relaxing space to unwind after a day of exploration. Guests can enjoy differing swimming pools, a well-equipped wellness area, and a range of dining options showcasing both international and Canarian cuisine. Our home on Tenerife is the Hotel Laguna Nivaria, a 4 star recently refurbished mansion house in the centre of San Cristobal de la Laguna, a designated UNESCO World Heritage City. Hotel facilities include a restaurant, bar/lounge, conservatory and spa (charges apply locally).
Room facilities include en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, safe, free wifi, hairdryer, TV, telephone and fridge.
This hotel has an Eco-friendly heart by way of an biomass boiler supplying all its heating and hot water, and have a farm growing their own produce so this fits in nicely with our own sustainable ethos.
Trip Information
Whilst on a Grade 4 walk these can be full or half day walks at a moderate pace over hilly terrain and is likely to include an element of sightseeing as well. Half day walking will probably include about 3 hours of walking, with full days having around 5 hours. Expect ascents and descents of up to about 600m.
Our Grade 6 walks are full days with appreciable amounts of ascent and descent with walks in some remote areas. Paths are mostly good, but there may be some steep and rough ground. Walks will last up to 6 hours and could involve as much as 750m of ascent and descent.
Please note some walks my involve walking on Lava Paths. These paths require particular concentration and steady footing to navigate.

Local Transport Costs
In the holiday cost, we have included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.
Optional Excursions
At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.
Holiday Budgeting
As you plan your holiday budget, it's essential to account for expenses such as drinks, meals not covered in the holiday price, entrance fees not included, optional local excursions, and any souvenirs or additional services like laundry. For a rough estimate, budgeting around £10-£20 per person per day for lunches and drinks is a helpful guideline.
Currency in Spain
The currency in Spain is the euro. You may wish to take some euro cash with you until you reach an ATM. Credit cards may not be accepted in smaller towns and rural areas.
Tipping
In your holiday price, we've included tipping for our local suppliers, covering hotel and restaurant staff, local guides, and drivers. Should you wish to make an extra contribution for a specific service, this should be given directly to the recipient at your discretion.
Tour Leaders
Your tour leader plays a crucial role in enhancing your holiday experience, and they share your passion for exploring the world on foot. In addition to being resourceful and organised they are also well-travelled and deeply enthusiastic about showing you new destinations. Your tour leader takes care of all the local administration, ensuring you can fully enjoy your holiday without worrying about the logistics. While leading group holidays, they always keep in mind that each group is composed of individuals. Each tour leader brings their unique style, talents, and professional background to the table. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.
Leader's Evening Briefing
Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.
Local Guides
Local guides in the Canary Islands bring each walk to life with expert knowledge and insider perspective. Available across all walking grades, they work hand in hand with your Ramble Worldwide leader to support every step while sharing stories, history, and hidden highlights. From volcanic landscapes to quiet villages, their local insight ensures a richer, more meaningful experience and a deeper connection to the islands.
London to La Palma and return from Tenerife.
Baggage allowance will be confirmed in your travel documents, sent approximately 10 days prior to departure.
Travel whilst on the islands will be by private coach and on foot.
Booking Your Own Travel Arrangements
If you prefer to arrange your own flights from a non-UK or regional airport or travel to your holiday destination by rail or car, you may qualify for 'land only' reductions, and we can provide details upon request. Feel free to reach out to us for more information.
Before finalizing any independent travel arrangements, especially if you're doing so 12 weeks or more before your intended travel date, please check with us first to ensure your holiday has been cleared to operate. If you plan to join your holiday locally, kindly inform us at least 14 weeks in advance.
If you're joining and leaving your holiday overseas, we assume, unless you specify otherwise, that you will join and leave the holiday at your hotel.
Although airport/station transfers are not included for those making independent travel arrangements, you may have the option to join the group at the overseas airport/station, depending on your arrival time. If interested, contact us at least 5 weeks before departure for more details.
Please be aware that you must arrive within 30 minutes of the group flight/train arrival to be eligible for the group transfer. Additionally, we'll need your flight number, arrival time, and departure point or independent travel arrangements to ensure the group leader can meet up with you. If you have a mobile, please ensure we have the number, and it is turned on while you are traveling for effective communication.
Hotel Transfers
When you book a flight or rail inclusive holiday, transfers between the airport/station and hotel and back are included. On some holidays, where we offer various flight options, the transfer vehicle may wait for all flights to land before transferring to the hotel.

To ensure the accurate administration of your holiday arrangements, kindly verify that the personal details we have for you are current and correct. Confirm that you've given us all the necessary information for securing your travel and accommodation. Please review your passport details, date of birth, and any other pertinent information crucial for the management of your holiday.

European Passport Advice
If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.
Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:
For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.
Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.
Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.
Breakfasts and dinners are included with dinners being taken in the hotels.
Lunches are not included but there are a wide range of supermarkets and bakery's in the nearby town centre to buy lunch provisions. Sometimes a walk will have a nice cafe on route to use for a bite to eat, your leader will tell you more at the evening briefings if this is an option.
Footwear
Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good, moulded sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks.

You might wish to take a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you for times when you're unable to wash your hands.
It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.
The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses, mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.
Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.
If you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.
If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you are unable to demonstrate that you are insured.
If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland, please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.
EHIC & GHIC Cards
Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.
It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.
