Hadrian's Wall Path is one of England's finest National Trails, and one of the few long-distance routes in the country where the scenery and the history compete equally for your attention. Every mile brings something new: the high crags and sweeping moorland of the Northumberland National Park, the still waters of the Northumbrian lakes, and the gentle pastoral valleys of Cumbria as the trail winds west towards the Solway coast.
The archaeological highlights are remarkable. Chesters Roman Fort, one of the best-preserved cavalry forts in Britain, sits close to the River North Tyne. Housesteads Fort, perched dramatically along the Whin Sill ridge, offers some of the most iconic views on the entire walk. Further west, Birdoswald Roman Fort marks where the trail crosses from Northumberland into Cumbria.
Beyond the Roman heritage, the walking itself is exceptional. The central section, traversing the dramatic escarpment of the Whin Sill, is considered among the finest ridge walking in England. Elsewhere, quieter stretches follow river valleys, pass through tranquil villages, and trace the old course of the wall through open farmland. It is a trail that rewards walkers at every grade, from those tackling their first multi-day walk to experienced long-distance hikers.

The full Hadrian's Wall Path is 84 miles long. Our guided walking holiday covers approximately 66 miles over six days of walking, with an arrival day at the start and departure after breakfast on the final morning, eight nights in total. Our self-guided holiday can also be tailored across a similar number of days.
The trail is graded Moderate. The central section, along the dramatic escarpment of the Whin Sill through Northumberland National Park, involves some sustained ascents and exposed ridgeline walking. The western sections in Cumbria are gentler. Walkers should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable covering up to 12 miles a day on varied terrain.
Our Hadrian's Wall walking holidays run from May to September. This is the most settled period for weather, with the longest days and the landscape at its most colourful. July and August are the busiest months on the trail; May, June, and September tend to be quieter.

Some experience of multi-day walking is helpful, particularly for the central section of the trail. You should be comfortable walking up to 12 miles per day over consecutive days.
