Based from Hassness Country House on the shores of Buttermere, you'll discover some of the Lake District's most spectacular landscapes. Each day offers a carefully planned walk led by experienced volunteer leaders, showcasing the hidden valleys, mountain tarns, lakeside paths and panoramic ridges that make this corner of Cumbria so special.
The walks featured below provide an indication of the terrain, distance and level of challenge typically experienced on our Grade 4 and Grade 7 holidays. Routes may vary throughout the season to take account of weather, ground conditions and the interests of the group, ensuring the best possible experience each day.
Whether you're exploring the tranquil shores of Crummock Water, the ancient woodlands of Borrowdale, the dramatic ridge-line views above Derwentwater or the iconic fells surrounding Buttermere, every walk has been chosen to reveal the very best of the Lake District's natural beauty.
Grade 4 Walks
Dale Head Tarn to Grange
A superb ridge walk beginning at Honister Pass, with sweeping views across Borrowdale, Derwentwater and the surrounding fells. Highlights include the peaceful waters of Dale Head Tarn, the airy ridges of High Spy and Maiden Moor, and an optional ascent of the ever-popular Cat Bells before descending to the picturesque village of Grange.

Borrowdale Valley
Widely regarded as one of the Lake District's most beautiful valleys, Borrowdale combines ancient woodland, riverside scenery and fascinating local history. This varied walk passes through Rosthwaite, follows stretches of the River Derwent and offers the opportunity to visit Millican Dalton's famous cave beneath Castle Crag.

Watendlath and Derwentwater
An outstanding low-level route linking some of the area's most iconic viewpoints. From the peaceful hamlet of Watendlath and its welcoming tearoom to the magnificent panoramas from Surprise View and Ashness Bridge, this walk combines beautiful scenery with classic Lakeland charm.

Rannerdale and Buttermere
Discover the dramatic valley of Rannerdale, famous for its spring bluebells and historic associations. The route follows shoreside paths around Crummock Water and Buttermere, taking in some of the most celebrated lake scenery in Britain before returning to Hassness via the renowned Buttermere lakeshore path.

Crummock Water and Loweswater
A gentle and rewarding walk through the peaceful western valleys. Highlights include the charming village of Loweswater, the historic Kirkstile Inn and views towards Scale Force, the Lake District's highest waterfall.

Grade 7 Walks
Watendlath, Walla Crag and Keswick
This varied route combines tranquil tarns, woodland paths and panoramic viewpoints. After visiting Watendlath and Ashness Bridge, the walk climbs to Walla Crag for spectacular vistas across Derwentwater before descending into the bustling market town of Keswick.

Great Gable and its Satellites
One of the most rewarding mountain days in the Lake District. Following a route across Grey Knotts, Brandreth and Green Gable, the walk culminates on the iconic summit of Great Gable, whose commanding position offers breathtaking views across the National Park.

Glaramara
A classic Borrowdale mountain walk to one of the district's finest viewpoints. The route climbs steadily through open fellside before reaching the rocky summit of Glaramara, where dramatic views stretch across the central fells and surrounding valleys.

Ascent: 700m
Sail Beck and Rigg Beck to Derwentwater
Beginning at Hassness Country House, this fascinating cross-country route links Buttermere with Borrowdale and Derwentwater. The changing scenery ranges from woodland and open fell to quiet valleys and lakeshore paths, with a variety of options available depending on conditions and group preference.

The Robinson Ridge
A true Buttermere classic. Starting at Honister Pass, the route follows a superb high-level ridge across Dale Head, Hindscarth and Robinson, with far-reaching views extending from the Newlands Valley to Skiddaw and the western fells before descending back towards Buttermere.
