If you're passionate about walking and eager to discover one of Europe's most spectacular island destinations, then this Grand Tour of Madeira promises an unforgettable journey. Rising dramatically from the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira is a walker's paradise, offering an extraordinary variety of landscapes within a remarkably compact island.
Known as the "Island of Eternal Spring", Madeira enjoys a mild year-round climate and an extensive network of well-maintained footpaths. From famous levada trails winding through ancient laurel forests to dramatic coastal paths and panoramic mountain routes, every walk reveals a different side of the island. Along the way you'll encounter colourful subtropical vegetation, terraced farmland, soaring sea cliffs and breathtaking volcanic scenery.
Our holiday begins with four nights in Porto Moniz, a charming village on Madeira's remote north-west coast. Surrounded by dramatic ocean scenery and renowned for its natural volcanic pools, it is the ideal base from which to explore the island's quieter and less-visited landscapes. Walks here include the spectacular Ponta do Pargo Circular, the lush Levada da Janela, and the historic paths of Fajã da Lenha, each showcasing a different aspect of Madeira's wild beauty.
The tour then continues with six nights in Funchal, Madeira's vibrant capital. A guided morning orientation walk with a local expert introduces the city's historic streets, lively market and rich cultural heritage, before a cable car journey to Monte provides superb views over the city and bay.
From Funchal, you'll enjoy a carefully chosen selection of the island's finest walks. Highlights include the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the São Lourenço Peninsula, the spectacular mountain scenery surrounding Curral das Freiras (Valley of the Nuns), a memorable walk along the rugged North Coast, and the tranquil woodland scenery of the Fontes Circular.
Madeira's reputation as one of Europe's premier walking destinations has grown significantly in recent years. Its combination of year-round sunshine, exceptional scenery and limited space for development has made it increasingly sought after by visitors looking for something more authentic than a traditional beach holiday.
Choosing a favourite walk will be no easy task, but that's precisely the charm of this Grand Tour, a journey showcasing the very best of Madeira's landscapes, culture and walking opportunities.
Please note: Although this holiday is graded as Grade 5 overall, some walks include sustained ascents and descents and may feel closer to Grade 6 in places. Please refer to the Holiday Information Sheet for full details.
