Every year, on the first full moon of August, Baía das Gatas comes alive during a famous musical festival, when thousands gather by the sea for nights of live music under the stars, turning this peaceful stretch of coast into one of Cabo Verde’s most vibrant celebrations.
From here, we’ll start our walk to discover São Vicente’s northern coast towards Salamansa, a quiet fishing village where colourful boats rest on the sand and the pace of life feels slow and wind-shaped.

Due to the nature of this trip, it may operate on an amended itinerary if weather conditions pose any risk - your guide will determine the best route and daily itinerary.
Usual daily walks
Distance: up to 8 miles depending on the programmed activity (info provided in each day’s description);
Ascent/Descent: between minimal and mountainous tracks (info provided in each day’s description); the maximum altitude reached on this holiday is approximately 1300m.
Terrain: generally good paths and tracks, with some rough/steep underfoot sections, footpaths, cobbles, and stepped tracks, tarmac.
Important note: walking poles and weather protection (rain/hot weather days) are highly recommended for comfort and safety.
Local Transport Costs
In the holiday cost, we have included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.
Optional Excursions
At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.
Holiday Budgeting
As you plan your holiday budget, it's essential to account for expenses such as drinks, meals not covered in the holiday price, entrance fees not included, optional local excursions, and any souvenirs or additional services like laundry. For a rough estimate, budgeting around £10-£20 per person per day for lunches and drinks is a helpful guideline.
Currency in Cape Verde
The currency on Cape Verde is the Cape Verdean Escudo.
The euro is sometimes acceptable as payment in hotels, restaurants and shops, in the main centres, but in more rural areas, only CVE may be accepted. The euro can be changed in banks and hotels, although you may experience long queues at banks when waiting to exchange. ATMs can be found in most towns, but may not always be available. Banks and even airport exchange facilities will not change Sterling cash or travellers’ cheques. Please note that upon leaving Cape Verde, CVEs cannot be re-converted to euros except in Portugal. Credit cards will only be accepted in larger hotels (including our hotels in Rui Vaz and Cidade Velha)
Tipping
Your leader will have some funds for tipping hotel staff and drivers. You may wish to consider allowing some cash, perhaps £2 per day, to supplement this since drivers and staff tend to be mines of information and very keen to offer assistance. As in many African countries the people rely on tips as part of their income. It must be stressed however that such tips are at your own discretion.
Tour Leaders
Your tour leader plays a crucial role in enhancing your holiday experience, and they share your passion for exploring the world on foot. In addition to being resourceful and organised they are also well-travelled and deeply enthusiastic about showing you new destinations. Your tour leader takes care of all the local administration, ensuring you can fully enjoy your holiday without worrying about the logistics. While leading group holidays, they always keep in mind that each group is composed of individuals. Each tour leader brings their unique style, talents, and professional background to the table. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.
Leader's Evening Briefing
Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.
Getting to Cape Verde is straightforward and forms part of the holiday. You'll fly from London to Lisbon, where, due to flight schedules, you'll enjoy an overnight stay and a guided sightseeing tour of Portugal's historic capital before continuing to Cape Verde.
The following day, you'll fly to São Vicente and begin your island exploration in Mindelo. Throughout the holiday, all transport arrangements are taken care of, allowing you to focus entirely on the experience. Travel between São Vicente and Santo Antão is by comfortable ferry, offering spectacular views of the islands from the sea, while private vehicle transfers take you to and from the start and finish points of each walk. Luggage is transferred between hotels for you, meaning you only need to carry a daypack on the trails.
