Setting out at a gentle pace, you’ll follow a circular route beginning at Marwick Bay, where a broad sweep of sand and sea introduces the calm, open character of Orkney’s coastline. From here, the path gradually rises towards the clifftops, revealing increasingly expansive views across the Atlantic. The terrain is manageable and steady, allowing you to walk comfortably while fully taking in your surroundings.

At the top, the landscape opens out to wide horizons, where the cliffs meet the sea below and seabirds wheel overhead. Your day centres on a relaxed and immersive walk to St Ninian’s Isle, reached by crossing one of the UK’s most unusual natural features – a sweeping sand tombolo that links the island to the mainland. As you make your way across this narrow strip of sand, with the sea stretching out on either side, there is an immediate sense of stepping into a quieter, more untouched world.

Once on the island, your circular walking route unfolds at an easy pace, allowing plenty of time to appreciate the scenery rather than rush through it.
