Walking holidays have been widely recognised as a rapidly growing travel trend, meaning everybody and their aunt is lacing up and hitting the trail; and we’re totally here for it. Whether you’re a complete beginner or you’ve previously dipped your toe into the world of rambling, there’s never a better time to embrace your first walking adventure.
We know how easy it is to lose yourself in the labyrinth that is walking locations, itineraries, graded routes and accommodations, that’s why we’re sharing our insider’s guide to the best beginner-friendly walks for 2026. And, luckily for you, it includes all of the above.
So, you’ve got all the gear, and with our help you’ll (hopefully) have a much better idea too. Let’s uncover our curated collection of gentle to moderate breaks fit for newcomers, highlighting a variety of desirable locations from the UK to Greece and Portugal.
With over 300 meticulously curated walking experiences to uncover, there’s something suited to all abilities at Ramble. For beginners, we recommend our guided walking holidays. Join a small, likeminded group and be led by an experienced volunteer or local guide on carefully selected itineraries, involving gentle walking on well-maintained paths with minimal ascent, typically 2-4 hours daily.
With regards to the logistics, we take care of everything from route finding and places of interest to travel, transfers and even your tour accommodation, so all you have to do is turn up!
You should now have a better understanding of how our holidays work, but how do you know which walking holiday is right for you? The main factor to bear in mind is the grading of the tour - this takes into account the overall difficulty and distance of each chosen itinerary.
Beginners and those who prefer a slower pace should start with our Gentle grade walking holidays (Grade 1). You don’t need to be an experienced walker, or able to cover long distances, to enjoy our collection of tours within this category. Typical daily walks cover around just 3 miles with gentle 50m ascents and descents, following good paths and tracks at a relaxed pace and spread comfortably throughout the day.
Got a little more in the tank? A step up from our Gentle grade walking holidays are our Leisurely Grade walking holidays (Grade 2&3), blending active sightseeing with shorter, city or countryside walks. You won't be tackling any difficult terrain and these tours only require you to walk for approximately 3-4 miles at a leisurely pace - with a few ups and downs to tackle along the way.
