Overview
This little known region of Greece, visited by fewer tourists, is tucked away in the southernmost region of the Peloponnese overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the Laconian Gulf. Home of Greek heroes and brave warriors, ancient historical sites and ageless legends, the area also offers walkers a fantastic variety of trails which meander through valleys, along stunning coastal routes and occasionally over undulating foothills of magnificent mountain ranges – where “uphill rest stops” are compulsory for the ultimate prize - spectacular views!
From Kalamata airport we embark on our journey of discovery and head south to the small fishing port of Gytheio, with its bustling harbour front tavernas. Here we will explore the hills and coast nearby, walking past olives groves and vineyards and stopping for stunning views over the Laconian Gulf. There will also be a day trip visiting Mystras and Sparta with privately hired coach.
From Gytheio we voyage by local ferry to the island of Kythira – one of the seven Ionian Islands, situated just below the south east tip of the Peloponnese. Walking in all four quarters of the island will take us past old mills and waterfalls, over natural limestone pavements, through quiet, sleepy villages, abandoned medieval fortress towns and small coves and bays where swimming will be hard to resist.
Back on the mainland our hired bus makes its way through the magnificent Taygetus mountain range as it majestically bears south and leads us towards the southern tip of the deep Mani to the sleepy, peaceful harbour village of Gerolimenas. Here we will relax and unwind for our last few days, visiting intriguing fortified villages on foot and walking on Cape Matapan.
On our return to the airport on departure day we will have time to visit Diros Cavos – an unexpected and delightful surprise for most visitors.
For those who have travelled to other destinations in Greece before, this trip will offer exciting and new perspectives. If you are a first-time traveller to Greece - then prepare for unforgettable and memorable delights. Springtime brings an added bonus of carpets of wild flowers.
